The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is one of the largest and most respected open universities in the world. IGNOU was established in 1985 through an Act of Parliament — the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act (1985) — and officially started its operations in 1987 with just two programs and 4,528 students. The university was named after Smt. Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, who believed in the power of education to bring about social and economic transformation.
From these humble beginnings, IGNOU has grown exponentially. Today, it offers more than 200 academic programs, ranging from certificate courses to doctoral degrees, and serves over 3 million students not only in India but also in 40+ foreign countries through its overseas study centers.

Assignments are submitted to study centers and evaluated by qualified tutors. The university conducts term-end exams twice a year — in June and December. Results and grade cards are published online for easy access.
